You focused too much on nouns, especially for things that can be dealt with by pointing. Sign language is fairly universal, so if you want tomatos at a stand, all you need do is point to them, show how many (or how many kilo with your fingers, and say please or ask how much. Having traveled in places that I didn't know a single word on the local language, I found I could get by with gestures, and pick up enough to build on that in a short time.
